DeafMind-
Mental Health Service for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People.

Deaf people encountering severe anxiety, depression or mental health problems experience a real difficulty in accessing appropriate mental health services. Few mental health professionals are skilled in sign language communication, or have knowledge of deaf culture and the deaf community. Specialist input is required if deaf people with mental health/behavioural issues are to have access to accurate diagnosis, effective treatment and follow-up.

DeafMind is a specialist deafness service with staff who can communicate fluently in Irish Sign Language and have in depth knowledge of deafness, communication differences and the life issues specific to deaf and hard of hearing people. DeafMind staff include an experienced specialist Consultant Psychiatrist, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Therapist, Social Workers for the Deaf and Counsellors.
In addition to those seeking a clear clinical diagnosis and treatment for mental illness, many deaf people using this service require advice and support for such issues as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Worries about the past
  • Stresses in the present
  • Fears about the future
  • Coping with particular life events

Outreach clinics are held nationally and home visits can be arranged.

Generic area mental health services can also avail of specialist advice and support from the highly skilled and experienced DeafMind team.

Referrals can be made by any concerned person, including self referral, but agreement from a GP is required.
