Information Weekend for Families with
Newly Diagnosed Deaf Children
On
Friday 5th March – Sunday 7th March 2010
in
The Heritage Hotel Portlaoise, Co Laois
In March 2010, DeafHear.ie will host its annual information weekend for families with children who have been newly diagnosed with a hearing loss. The previous weekends were a great success and the feedback from the families that attended was extremely positive, some of these comments can be seen on our website www.deafhear.ie in the information archive section.
The weekend will bring families from across the country together, giving you the opportunity to gain information about supports available locally and nationally from professionals and peers. The weekend will be led by experienced DeafHear.ie staff. Our guest speakers are Dr Jesudas Dayalan – Audiological Scientist and Sineád McClay - Speech and Language Therapist, both of whom have a vast amount of experience working with children with a hearing loss. There will be a session with a deaf person and their sibling / family members regarding their experiences growing up in a hearing family. There will also be ample opportunities to talk to other families and DeafHear.ie staff.
We are pleased to offer children aged 12 years and under the chance to take part in a wide range of activities in a Kids Club run by trained and experienced childcare workers, while parents
participate in the sessions. We will provide a private room where older children can watch DVDs and play interactive games.
The weekend is residential to enable families to share their experiences in a supportive and confidential environment.
The Heritage Hotel is nestled in the heart of Portlaoise, only one mile from the Dublin/Limerick/Cork Motorway - the most accessible central location in Ireland. This luxury 4 star midlands hotel is only one hour from Dublin with direct rail access from any part of the country. The hotel offers a number of family rooms (limited to 4 family members – a supplement may be incurred if additional accommodation is required), residents also have access to a fitness suite and swimming pool.
The cost of attending the weekend is €60 per adult (16 and over) and €30 per child (under 16) for the weekend. All accommodation, meals, information pack and children’s activities will be provided by DeafHear.ie.
