DeafHear.ie to provide Hearing Screening Service
DeafHear.ie has been campaigning for many years for the introduction
of Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS). The HSE’s own
report on UNHS recommended its immediate introduction 4 years ago, but parents and newborn babies are still waiting for the service. Late diagnosis of hearing loss results in developmental delay and lifelong disadvantage. UNHS enables early diagnosis and intervention, which has massive life benefits for deaf children. Every week 2 deaf children are born in Ireland, but only those born in Northern Ireland have access to UNHS.
From October 2008, DeafHear.ie, in response to the many queries from concerned parents, will offer newborn hearing screening from its Resource Centre in North Frederick Street, Dublin 1.
DeafHear.ie still implores the HSE to introduce UNHS as soon as possible. UNHS has been shown to SAVE the taxpayer considerable sums of money, while dramatically improving the quality of life of deaf children.
